How to Get Healthy
Get healthy
Being healthy requires a combination of good eating, regular physical activity and staying mentally well. The right choices can help you live longer and lower your risk of heart disease, stroke, some cancers, obesity and other diseases.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle isn’t easy, but it’s important for your health. You can start by making small changes in your daily routine and gradually build up to a more balanced lifestyle.
Eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains and moderate in sugar, salt and total fat. Try to avoid foods high in saturated and trans fats.
Be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week, or break it up into three 10-minute sessions. Choose activities that you enjoy such as walking, sports, dance or yoga. Find ways to make exercise fun and include a friend or family member.
Avoid too much salt, sugar and alcohol. Try to drink water or unsweetened tea and coffee rather than soda, juice and soft drinks.
Be mentally healthy by finding ways to reduce stress and get enough sleep. It is also important to keep up with preventive healthcare such as regular physicals, screenings and the occasional checkup or test. Getting healthy is an ongoing process and it’s normal to have setbacks. Try to get back on track as soon as you can.
