What Is Counselling?
Counselling can help people to address a range of issues such as depression, anxiety, relationship problems, traumatic events and work-related stress. The goal of counselling is to help people manage these issues and improve their quality of life. Counselling is a type of psychotherapy that provides one-to-one support and guidance with a trained therapist (counsellor or psychologist).
The main aim is to provide a safe space to talk about difficult feelings. A counsellor will listen to your concerns and may offer suggestions on how to change your behaviour or thinking patterns. However, they won’t tell you what to do and will usually ask questions that will encourage you to find your own answers.
A counsellor can use various different therapies depending on what the issue is. They will generally discuss any symptoms that are affecting your daily life and will also explore your personal history to understand the cause of these issues. They can also provide strategies to overcome or cope with certain conditions and emotions such as depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.
